Conan the Barbarian
Frank Frazetta, The Barbarian, 1965. Oil on canvas, 20 x 30 inches. Cover illustration for Conan the Adventurer, by Robert E. Howard and L. Sprague de Camp (Lancer Books, 1966).

“All of my physicality is in my work. That’s why I’m so proud of my physical side, because I did a lot of stuff that I know many guys couldn’t do. What I did wasn’t so much my bodily construction as much as my mind. I know it’s my mind…I always had the ability to sort of psych myself out when I had to. I did it with my art to. I’d do some of those paintings overnight – you think I didn’t “wind up the machine” and let it go? It’s an amazing thing. Those Conan paintings even, most of them were done in a night. I had to work that fast to be spontaneous. If I had sat and pondered them for weeks at a time, they wouldn’t have looked like they do.”
